South Queensferry is the first place you land coming south over the Queensferry Crossing from Fife, which makes it the nearest Edinburgh-side town to base in Dalgety Bay. It sits on the south shore of the Firth of Forth about ten miles from Edinburgh city centre, inside the City of Edinburgh council area, between the three bridges. It was a royal burgh, historically of West Lothian, and grew around Queen Margaret's ferry, which ran from the eleventh century until the Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964. Around 10,400 people live here, Dalmeny station gives it the Fife Circle, Port Edgar marina sits at the west end, and it keeps its own traditions in the Burry Man and the Loony Dook.

The housing is three towns in one. The historic High Street and the closes and terraces behind it hold centuries-old stone buildings; the twentieth-century estates at Echline, Ferrymuir and Springfield make up much of the town; and the last few years have brought a wave of new-build, with the Dalmeny Park development finished on the old Agilent ground and hundreds more homes going in at Builyeon Road beside the crossing, and Kirkliston growing just down the road. That mix means careful rewires and modern boards in the old town, and EV chargers, from £900 for a Hypervolt, Zappi or Ohme fitted in a day, on the newer driveways.

Emergency-wise, South Queensferry is the one Edinburgh-side town Jack can treat almost like home ground: it is straight over the bridge from Dalgety Bay and he answers his own phone day or night. A full loss of power, a board that trips straight back out, a socket that has gone bang or a smell of burning gets a fast, personal response, and the fault gets traced and fixed properly rather than reset and left.

For planned work, older High Street property and the earlier estates are frequently still on a fuse board with no RCD protection, and a modern 18th-edition consumer unit with full RCBO and surge protection, from £700, fitted in a day and certified, is the sensible upgrade before chargers or extensions go on.
