Kelty sits right beside junction 4 of the M90 on the Fife and Kinross-shire boundary, north of Cowdenbeath and a few miles short of Loch Leven and Kinross. It grew from around 1850 as a mining village, mostly around pits owned by the Fife Coal Company, and at the height of the coal years in the late 1970s it was home to about 9,000 people. The village is largely twentieth-century housing: the streets that replaced the miners' rows, council-built estates, and Maryburgh, the old planned village that now forms the northern end of Kelty, plus the hamlet of Keltybridge. A large new development south of Cocklaw Street, with permission in principle for around 900 homes plus a school and health centre, will add a big block of brand-new stock over the coming years. So the work splits: modern boards and rewires for the older houses, and EV chargers and outbuilding power for the newer ones.
