Dalgety Bay: this is home turf.

Dalgety Bay is one of Scotland's newest towns. Building started in 1962 on the old Donibristle airfield and the Earl of Moray's estate, phase after phase, and it has grown into a coastal commuter town of around 9,700 people on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, with its own station on the Fife Circle since 1998 and the M90 and Queensferry Crossing a few minutes away through Inverkeithing. Roughly three in ten of the people who live here work in Edinburgh. Snelling Electrical is based on Letham Way, right in the middle of it, so this is the one page on the site where local electrician means the man lives round the corner.

Because the whole town was built by volume housebuilders from the sixties onwards, the housing runs in phases: the first streets are now over sixty years old, later phases fill the ground west towards Hillend, and the newest homes and flats sit down at St David's Harbour on the site of the old coal harbour, with more approved at Spencerfield between the town and Inverkeithing. Nearly everything has a driveway or a garage and its own supply, which is why Dalgety Bay is the strongest EV-charger ground Jack has: Hypervolt, Zappi or Ohme fitted in a day, from £900, with the fuse board checked on the same visit.

Being based here is what makes emergency work in Dalgety Bay different. Jack answers his own phone day or night, and a call-out in KY11 is a short drive from his own front door rather than a run across Fife: a board that has tripped and will not reset, sockets dead after a bang, a burning smell from a consumer unit, or the whole house off while the neighbours still have lights. He gets to genuine emergencies first, finds the actual fault and fixes it properly rather than resetting and hoping.

The age of the town also decides the planned work. A first-phase house from the sixties or seventies has often had extensions, kitchens, showers and now an EV charger hung off it, and plenty are still on a board with no RCD or RCBO protection, the sort of thing that flags straight away on an EICR. A modern 18th-edition consumer unit with full RCBO and surge protection, from £700, fitted in a day and certified, is the natural next job in a house of that age. Rented homes in the town need a valid EICR at least every five years under the Repairing Standard, from £200, and because Jack does the inspection and any remedial work himself there is no second contractor to chase.
